Our next Midweek Conservation & Conversation will take place on Wednesday 4th of October from 9 - 11am.
Sunday was a perfect day for our volunteers to be out in the Glenfern reserve. It was pleasing to see wildflowers appearing in area 10 and only the occasional weed. At morning tea we were greeted by a white faced heron on the frog pond, and Andrew gave a talk about the Swamp Gum (Eucalyptus ovata), one of the common eucalypts within the reserve. Thanks to everyone who came out to help and those that support us in other ways. Our next Midweek Conservation & Conversation will take place on Wednesday 4th of October from 9 - 11am. From clouds to blue skies, Sunday morning had it all – including a talk on the narrow-leaved peppermint eucalyptus at morning tea. It was the third in a series of fun educational talks Andrew is doing to help us identify all of the six main eucalypts in the reserve. You’ll also notice a rocky theme throughout the photo album; I've taken a lichen to them? Plus, keep an eye out for two animals that are best observed from a distance. Thanks to all who came out to the reserve for our Bush Restoration. Our next visit will take place on Wednesday 6th from 9 - 11am. Photos by Daniel Jackson
The air was calm and the sun filtered through the trees and highlighted the mounds of grass. It was the third Sunday of the month and we were working in Area 5 – another stunning area and result of the past twenty years of work from volunteers, along with support from Yarra Ranges council and Melbourne Water. At 11am we shared our findings including a sighting of a black-tailed/swamp wallaby, then Andrew educated us on how to identify Long-leaved Box (Eucalyptus goniocalyx). After a great morning tea and group photo we discovered a patch of pittosporum seedlings that were having a great time – until we discovered them. And check out in the photos the colour mutations on one of the seedlings! Our next midweek Conservation and Conversation takes place on the 2nd of August. Photos by Daniel Jackson
After a run of weather-related cancellations, we had a great turn-out last Sunday, along with a couple of new friendly faces. Working in beautiful grassy areas 6 and 7 there were few weeds to be found - a nice surprise for us. Which left more time for taking photos… Thanks to everyone who volunteered their time. Sunday was a perfect day to restore some bushlands, and restore we did – in areas 7, 8 & 9. At morning tea, Jackson regaled us with information about the local tubercle burrowing crayfish, leaving us hungry for more. All in all, a wonderful morning was had in the sunshine. And you're welcome to join us next time, on the first Wednesday of the month and/or the third Sunday of the month. Keep an eye out here for more details. And now, please enjoy the following images contributed by four of our lovely members… Our first bush restoration for 2022 was blessed with some tremendous weather and some new faces. And boy oh boy did the weeds turn on a show. Hawthorns, blackberries, passionfruit vines?!? They’d been having a field day while we were going through a pandemic over the last two years. Area 12 also had a strong selection of thistles to deal with. Those prickly so and sos.. Check out the photos, below. Our next event is the Midweek Conservation & Conversation on the first Wednesday of the month from 9-11am. - Daniel Photos by Daniel J Jackson
Our last volunteering session at Glenfern this morning for the year. Just a small turn out but we got some urgent tasks ticked off. Including brush-cutting and track repairs. Council has replaced the damaged Glenfern sign – thanks YRC. Good news: Our Welcome Leaf has been repaired and reinstalled at the main entrance, thanks Jackson – nice work. A super big thanks to all our volunteers and supporters who have helped out during this challenging year. ALERT Snakes are active in Glenfern. We encountered a small Copper Head on the track down to the quarry. Keep in mind that pandemics come and go but Glenfern is here forever. Our first major working bee back since the lockdown 6 finished was a ripper. The weeds had been enjoying many months of growth uninterrupted – until that fateful day: the 21st of November. Check out our photos from areas 10 and 11, taken by myself, Daniel, as well as Linda and Nicole. Today we worked in Area 7, which was cleared of Sweet Pittosporum in 2016. It was an area that we hadn't ventured into for over a year and we were so pleased to see the amazing regrowth of indigenous shrubs, trees, under-storey and native grasses all looking very lush and healthy. I've included some before photos so you can see how thick the Pittosporums were and how nothing grew beneath them. There is also an after Pittosporum removal where it does look very barren. Thanks for everyone who came along and lent a hand. It was so good to get out in nature with friends after lockdowns and bad weather. Photos by Linda Fullagar
I really enjoyed today's bush restoration morning. It was the beautiful bushland we were walking through, being outside in the fresh air and the wonderful company of the Friends of GVB that made it a special day. Anne gave an interesting talk about the Mistletoe bird she had carefully observed over a period of time that had been nesting at Glenfern and Mike spoke about Platypuses. And...our delicious morning teas are back! Thank you to the volunteers that came along today. You are all marvellous. Photos by Emily, Mike Svern and Linda Fullagar
