The rain stayed away for our 21st birthday celebration. Thank-you rain. So we got to celebrate and partake in some guided tours of the bushlands to appreciate the flora and fauna. Thanks to past members for making the journey back to Upwey to join us. It was great to catch up again, and to show you what improvements have been made since you were last here. And thanks also to the passionate volunteers that have played a part over the last of twenty-one years to help transform Glenfern into what we see today. The reserve is enjoyed by many people every day because of those mammoth efforts, as well as assistance and grants from Yarra Ranges Council and Melbourne Water. If you’d like to read up on some of the recent history pre-Glenfern Valley Bushlands and then what has taken place since, visit Our Reserve. Photos by Daniel Jackson
The Friends of Glenfern Valley Bushlands have turned 21! We are celebrating the occasion with a get-together at Glenfern Valley Bushlands on Sunday 23rd, 9.30am - 12.30. There will be children's activities, badge making, free plants, as well as guided bird and plant walks. Morning tea and 21st birthday cake will be at 11am. Hope to see you there.
On yesterday’s Members' Day, we broke into three groups to tour the reserve. The first group visited our nesting boxes with the pole camera, to take a look at the resident sugar gliders. The second walked through the areas where large areas of sweet pittosporum have been removed and indigenous species have been planted. And the third group (that I joined, that most of the following photos are from) went bushwalking through the reserve to see how it’s been effected by the changing climate. And to consider what approach we might now take with our continuing bush restoration. We were also reunited with our recently restored working bee trailer, with many thanks to Lindsay for the work done. – Daniel Photos by Daniel Jackson
Yesterday, many Glenfern members gathered under clear skies to take a guided tour of our reserve as a way to thank those members for their support. Thanks to Linda, Andrew, David and others, we got to learn (or re-learn) much about the flora and fauna that we are lucky to have at Glenfern. I (Daniel) went off-track with team Andrew & Linda, so most of these photos are from that trek. Mid-morning we enjoyed a tasty morning tea at the old quarry. It was great to see many familiar faces, some that join the regular crew every now and then, and some that are purely financial members. Any level of commitment is welcome and appreciated, and should you not currently be a member, please visit the following link and consider supporting us and/or getting involved: Glenfern Membership. It was 15 years ago, in late 2001, the Friends of Glenfern Valley Bushlands was formed and we would like to invite you to a member's day celebration at the Bushlands on Sunday October 16th, 10am - 1pm. There will be guided walks, kids activities, lucky member prizes and a continuous morning tea. Even if you don't have much time it would great if you could pop in and say hello. Park at the main, middle car park and walk down Echidna Track to the frog ponds and amphitheatre where the celebration will be.
We enjoyed meeting our members and showing them our beautiful reserve. What a difference we have all made in changing what was once a weedy rubbish dump to a bushland oasis. Thank you everyone. Photos by Linda Fullagar
