Just a reminder that our Conversation and Conservation morning is planned for this Wednesday 2nd November at 9am. The task will be removing the sleeves and stakes from the plantings in Area 14. These plants were planted by the Fairhills students in April 2021 and they have grown so well and need freeing from their sleeves. Area 14 is actually on the other side of Ferny Creek a 100m or so along Ferndale Road and it would be easiest to meet there. See the map below. Please bring gloves and sturdy shoes. We will have tools and some morning tea. We are not quite sure what the weather will be like so we will keep in touch and let you know if the working bee has been cancelled. 🌿
The rain stayed away for our 21st birthday celebration. Thank-you rain. So we got to celebrate and partake in some guided tours of the bushlands to appreciate the flora and fauna. Thanks to past members for making the journey back to Upwey to join us. It was great to catch up again, and to show you what improvements have been made since you were last here. And thanks also to the passionate volunteers that have played a part over the last of twenty-one years to help transform Glenfern into what we see today. The reserve is enjoyed by many people every day because of those mammoth efforts, as well as assistance and grants from Yarra Ranges Council and Melbourne Water. If you’d like to read up on some of the recent history pre-Glenfern Valley Bushlands and then what has taken place since, visit Our Reserve. Photos by Daniel Jackson
The Friends of Glenfern Valley Bushlands have turned 21! We are celebrating the occasion with a get-together at Glenfern Valley Bushlands on Sunday 23rd, 9.30am - 12.30. There will be children's activities, badge making, free plants, as well as guided bird and plant walks. Morning tea and 21st birthday cake will be at 11am. Hope to see you there.
Our guest presenter is Mike Sverns, who is part of the Helmeted Honeyeater Recovery Team (DELPW) and a FGVB member. Mike will introduce us to this beautiful endangered bird and the work various organisations are doing to save it from extinction. Following the presentation is our AGM and a brief general meeting. Thursday 13th October, 7pm, Upwey Township Hall (opposite skatepark).
Wednesday's Conservation and Conversation saw us tidying up the entrances and quarry area for our upcoming 21st birthday celebration on October 23rd. Plenty of mowing, whipper-snippering and weed removing action followed by a tasty morning tea and a chat. Thank you to everyone that came along, and to Marleen for the providing the morning tea. This coming Wednesday October 5th we'll hold our midweek Conservation and Conversation morning from 9am till 11am followed by morning tea. We meet at the central car park. Please bring gloves, sturdy shoes and drinking water. We'll supply you with tools, hand sanitiser, and morning tea. 🌿
