This morning we spent a productive and informative session weeding in Area 2 where an environmental burn was conducted last December. Working with Gabe from Fairy Wren Contractors and Jade from the
Yarra Ranges Bushland team we weeded around the exisiting Dianella, Lomandra, Velvet Tussock Grass and other indigenous species, giving them space to expand and thrive. It was mainly weedy grasses that we were pulling out and it was great to have Jade and Gabe there to help identify and teach us. As usual, our morning concluded with a delicious shared morning tea and a chat. Thanks everyone for coming along. Photos by Linda Last Sunday morning we ventured into areas 12 and 3 where a few interesting weed finds were made. (See the photos below for the juicy details.) We spent morning tea at Jill’s Rest, the lovely flat area at the bottom of Area 12 with a bench seat, close to the Archery Club entrance. A local magpie joined us as Linda gave a talk on Veronica gracilis AKA Slender Speedwell, a lovely flowering perennial herb with a spreading habit. We also were witness to a mob of kangaroos making their way through the reserve. A lovely morning in all, and we give our thanks for the volunteers that helped out. You can join us next time, on Wednesday 2 July at 9am, and/or Sunday 20 July at 9:30am. Photos by Daniel J On Sunday we worked in Area 2 (adjacent to Glenfern Road and New Road) with the addition of some new volunteers. The area was in great condition, weed-wise, with a couple of five foot Hawthorn’s having evaded detection unto this fateful day. It was good to re-visit some of the grand tree-friends of the reserve. (See photos below.) The next time you can join us in the reserve is on Wednesday 1st at 9am for our Conservation and Conversation morning. Photos by Daniel Jackson
We had the pleasure of returning to the bushlands on the weekend to remove the weeds that have taken residence over the past twelve months. We worked in areas 2 down through 12, which afforded us views of the city and grasslands, as well as riparian forest and Ferny Creek. Thanks to those who attended and welcome to those whose first time it was working with our Friends Of group. Glenfern Valley Bushlands really is a special place, that's provided a welcome sanctuary for people desiring to connect with nature, or stretch their legs during this isolating time. Take a look through the photos myself (Daniel Jackson), Edie and Linda took to enjoy some of the scenery and points of interest that we witnessed. Thanks to everyone that joined us on Sunday to work in areas 2 & 12. This saw us working on the grassy boundaries between Glenfern Road and New Road, down through to the riparian area by the creek. We were glad to have a clear day to welcome some new faces to the group, and to bring the Glenfern Valley Bushlands closer to its indigenous state. Look what we found when working in the Reserve today. Later that morning when we went to show the other volunteers we discovered it had gone. Probably taken by an unthinking visitor to the Reserve.
Fungi are so important to the health of the forest as they help break down dead organic matter and return nutrients to the soil. They can also provide food to some species. Remember to take only photographs.... Today was spent in the lovely long grasses, removing pitto, boneseed and blackberry seedlings. Then we put our new inspection camera into practice and viewed some nesting boxes... No-one home – yet. Photos by Daniel Jackson

It was a glorious day to be working in the bushlands. The sun was out and the bush was alive with birds all enjoying it's warmth - we even came across a Swamp wallaby. Thank you to everyone who came. Photos by Linda Fullagar The 16x9 photos below are part of an experimental series titled, "Volunteers From Afar". Other names considered for this collection were "The Stalker Series" and "Wildebeests in the Wild".* (*No volunteers were harmed in the shooting of this series.) Photos by Daniel Jackson
